Fiji’s Nasinu Launches Seniors Association to Combat Elder Loneliness

Randhir Prasad, the chairperson of the Nasinu District Council for Older Persons, has urged the public to value and care for their elderly family members, following a recent recreational program organized for over 60 senior citizens at the Fiji Museum. This event included residents from the Valelevu Nursing Home and aimed to address the stark issue of loneliness that many seniors experience due to neglect by their families.

During the event, which featured various activities such as museum tours, medical screenings, and nature appreciation sessions, Mr. Prasad noted that many elders feel isolated and forgotten. “We will also do profiling. If you are being neglected by your loved ones or your own children, we want to know your stories,” he stated, appealing for greater attention to the needs of the elderly.

The initiative not only provided an opportunity for leisure but also aimed to improve the physical and mental health of participants. “The recreational program is to reduce your stress and improve both your physical and mental health,” Prasad explained, encouraging the seniors to connect with one another and share their life experiences.

Additionally, Mr. Prasad announced the upcoming launch of the Nasinu Older Persons Association, designed to further support and empower seniors in the district, indicating a commitment to making these recreational events regular occurrences. Similar initiatives have been seen across Fiji, including other Elderly Recreational Days aimed at reducing feelings of loneliness and fostering community connections among seniors.

These events resonate with the broader efforts by the government and various organizations to provide a supportive and inclusive environment for the elderly. The growing attention on the emotional and practical needs of seniors reflects a hopeful direction towards fostering a society that truly values its older generations.

As communities come together to ensure that seniors are cared for and respected, the positive developments in elder care provide a promising outlook for the future. These movements spotlight the essential role of community engagement and compassion in uplifting the lives of older citizens, helping them feel valued and connected.
