Naivakacau Village in Tailevu has officially unveiled a new evacuation centre along with an ablution block, aimed at boosting disaster preparedness for its community. This recent development is expected to significantly enhance the living conditions for village residents, demonstrating the government’s commitment to safeguarding rural communities that are particularly vulnerable to natural disasters.
Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, Sakiasi Ditoka, emphasized that the new facilities provide safe, inclusive, and accessible spaces for families, women, and the elderly during emergencies. The government has invested around $50,000 in this initiative, which reflects a collaborative effort among the Ministry, local authorities, and the villagers themselves.
Losana Bitu, the leader of the Naivakacau Village Women’s Club, highlighted the importance of the disability-friendly features of the centre, stating that these upgrades bring peace of mind to residents, ensuring both safety and dignity in times of crisis. Village headman Navitalai Vunimoli reiterated that the new facilities will bolster the community’s readiness and comfort in the face of disasters.
This initiative aligns with a larger trend observed across other regions of Fiji, where communities such as Daku Village and Yalobi Village have also inaugurated similar evacuation centres to enhance their resilience against natural calamities. The continuous development of these facilities across various villages not only symbolizes improved safety measures but also fosters community collaboration and unity.
As more evacuation centres are established, there is growing optimism that these advancements will empower local communities, allowing them to manage and respond to risks posed by natural disasters more effectively. These efforts are a positive step forward in ensuring a safer and more prepared future for all Fijians.
