Fiji Airports Ltd hosted a commissioning ceremony last Thursday for several terminal facility development projects, which include the construction of a new Gate 8 at Nadi International Airport. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Japan Fund for Prosperous and Resilient Asia and the Pacific, funded by the Japanese government, are providing financial support for these initiatives.
Aaron Batten, regional director of ADB’s Pacific Subregional office, emphasized the importance of tourism to the Fijian economy, stating that the grant from Japan is assisting in enhancing Nadi International Airport’s capacity and improving tourism processes in response to the increasing visitor arrivals.
The new Gate 8 will offer features such as universal seating areas, universally accessible restrooms—including a family restroom—water fountains, electronic charging stations, crowd control barriers, and additional baggage trolleys. These improvements aim to alleviate passenger congestion at the departure gate, manage the flow of people, and enhance overall airport services.
Fiji Airports CEO Mesake Nawari noted that visitor arrivals are at an all-time high, and this project will enhance efficiency, ensuring that travelers continue to choose Fiji as their destination.
