Significant advancements are being made in the upgrade of Nadi International Airport, aimed at improving service quality to accommodate the expected growth in tourism. The Fijian government remains confident that through the Non-International Airport Master Plan, Fiji Airports will not only enhance service quality but also provide visitors with a top-notch experience.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism, Viliame Gavoka, has confirmed that early works are already underway on the departure lounge contract, which will facilitate a doubling in size of the Fiji Airways lounge later this year. This upgrade is crucial for improving the flow of transit passengers, which will also prepare the airport for the future implementation of smart gates, or e-gates, for both arriving and departing travelers.
Gavoka remarked on the significance of these advancements, stating, “Smart gates, improved self-check-in systems, and automated bag drops will be upgraded and expanded.” These improvements are set to enhance passenger flow throughout the terminal. A pilot deployment is planned for later this year, with the full implementation anticipated by January 2026.
However, the capacity of the airport to cater to the escalating number of visitors has come under scrutiny, particularly from Independent Member of Parliament Rinesh Sharma. He emphasized the need for reassurance regarding whether the current airport lounge can handle the influx of transit visitors, considering the recent surge in tourism.
In response, Gavoka has reiterated the project’s objective to elevate the airport experience by upgrading infrastructure and accommodation services, ensuring that the airport upholds its world-class status and aligns with Fiji’s growing connectivity and tourism demands.
This upgrade initiative aligns well with previous projects undertaken by Fiji Airports, where extensive plans were outlined to improve both passenger experience and infrastructure through a significant $1 billion investment.
