The commissioning of the Nabouwalu Passenger Terminal marks a significant milestone in enhancing maritime travel in the region. Minister for Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa, has announced exciting developments for the next phase aimed at improving safety, accessibility, and comfort for maritime commuters.
The process for acquiring a foreshore lease adjacent to the newly opened terminal is currently underway, having been initiated by the Department of Lands. Minister Nalumisa stated that the advertisement period is now active, allowing the public to raise any objections prior to the formal issuance of the lease.
Upon securing the lease, the Ministry plans to carry out a land survey alongside an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). These necessary steps will facilitate the engagement of qualified consultants and contractors to commence engineering and backfilling works for the project’s next phase.
The second phase of development will include the construction of a covered boardwalk measuring approximately 200 meters, which will create a direct link between the passenger terminal and the jetty. Minister Nalumisa highlighted this improvement as a means to enhance travel, particularly under adverse weather conditions, with an estimated investment of around $1.5 million. A comprehensive appraisal will be prepared based on current market conditions, ensuring that the project meets the community’s needs.
Furthermore, Nalumisa has confirmed plans to upgrade the Natovi Passenger Terminal, with construction slated to begin in January 2026. This initiative not only emphasizes the government’s commitment to improve transportation infrastructure but also aims to create a modern and user-friendly travel hub that addresses the needs of the community. The vision for an integrated and people-centric travel experience is becoming increasingly tangible, promising to uplift maritime travel for residents and visitors alike.
