The Fijian government is making notable strides in its relocation initiative for Nabavatu Village located in Dreketi, Macuata, with plans to construct the first 10 homes at the new site by July. This project aims to provide stable and disaster-resistant housing for the 37 families significantly impacted by Tropical Cyclone Ana in January 2021. During a recent visit to Savadrua Village, Minister for Rural, Maritime Development and Disaster Management, Sakiasi Ditoka, provided updates on the progress of the initiative.

Initial delays in construction were attributed to challenges in accessing necessary materials. However, Minister Ditoka announced that the pouring of cement for the first column of construction is set to take place next Wednesday. This relocation project is part of a larger initiative supported by the Green Climate Fund, with a total estimated cost of approximately $5.9 million approved by the Cabinet in February.

The cyclone wreaked havoc on the Nabavatu community, leading to the temporary relocation of 38 families to tents in Savadrua. Following comprehensive assessments with input from the Ministry of Lands and the Department of Environment, a new site covering 16.88 hectares was selected, situated about 800 meters from the original village.

The project will result in the construction of a total of 37 homes, with the remaining 27 expected to be completed by December. This effort showcases Fiji’s commitment to enhancing disaster resilience and serves as a model for future relocation initiatives across the nation.

As families eagerly await their move into safer and more stable homes, this project symbolizes not just a return to normalcy but also the strength and unity of the Nabavatu community, which has exemplified resilience amidst adversity. There is a palpable hope for a brighter future as these families prepare to embrace sustainable living conditions.

This development highlights the crucial role of government support in recovery initiatives, emphasizing the necessity of prompt action in disaster response and showcasing how communities can overcome hardships when they come together.
