Fiji's Na Koro Resort: A New Gem in Tropical Tourism

Fiji’s Na Koro Resort: A New Gem in Tropical Tourism

In July 1988, President Ratu Sir Penaia Ganilau inaugurated Na Koro, a luxurious new resort nestled in the idyllic Lesiaceva Peninsula of Savusavu, Fiji. This multi-million-dollar venture, part of the International Quality Inn chain, marked a significant milestone in the region’s tourism landscape. The initial phase of the resort featured 20 traditional thatched “bure” accommodations, each equipped with self-contained bathrooms, refrigeration, and air conditioning, ensuring a comfortable experience for visitors.

During the opening ceremony, President Ratu Sir Penaia highlighted the resort’s picturesque location, likening it to a serene tropical island village. He emphasized that the name “Na Koro” translates to “the village,” embodying the essence of harmony, natural beauty, and warmth of the local people. He expressed confidence that guests would enjoy a unique blend of charm and tranquility, offering a refreshing alternative to the bustling tourist experience.

Ratu Sir Penaia also underscored the potential for tourism growth in the northern region of Fiji, stating, “If tourism is primarily about people, places, and water, then Vanua Levu possesses every ingredient necessary to develop into a thriving tourist destination.” He pointed out the stunning white sandy beaches and some of the world’s richest marine resources, combined with the welcoming attitude of the local communities.

This commitment to tourism development reflects a broader trend seen in the region, where investments in hospitality are contributing significantly to economic growth. Similar initiatives in other areas, like the Lomaloma Resort on Vanuabalavu, further illustrate this trend. There, the tourism sector has seen remarkable developments, generating substantial employment opportunities and contributions to the national GDP. As Fiji continues to invest in its tourism infrastructure, including eco-tourism and rural tourism initiatives, the positive outlook for the local economy and cultural engagement remains strong.

Overall, Na Koro’s launch is not only a celebration of tourism but also a testament to Fiji’s growing reputation as a prime global vacation destination. The positive ripple effects from such projects promise to uplift communities, create jobs, and enhance both local and foreign visitors’ experiences in this beautiful archipelago.
