Fijian Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) encounter significant obstacles as they attempt to expand their reach beyond local markets. The lack of exposure and market visibility hampers their potential to tap into lucrative international opportunities. Permanent Secretary for Trade, Shaheen Ali, emphasized that these enterprises often struggle with marketing and logistical challenges, which limits their growth potential.
In light of these challenges, the Fijian government is actively seeking ways to assist MSMEs. Ali highlighted the importance of enhancing digital marketing and e-commerce capabilities to mitigate costs associated with reaching international markets. He stated, “This will address some of those challenges, whether it’s exposing and marketing your products or having a physical shop in a metropolitan area like Suva.” To further support local entrepreneurs, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Manoa Kamikamica, encouraged businesses to seek assistance from the ministry and take advantage of available resources.
The government is committed to improving various platforms that facilitate global commerce, including addressing issues related to digital payment systems and logistics which are crucial for MSMEs to thrive. This approach aligns with a broader initiative aimed at creating a robust ecosystem for Fijian products, especially those in niche markets such as handicrafts and natural cosmetics.
The overarching strategy includes efforts to raise awareness of border requirements that often pose as hurdles for businesses looking to export. According to previous discussions led by Watisoni Nata, Chair of the MSME Council, inadequate knowledge surrounding compliance and logistics often leads to lost opportunities in international trade. By improving education and support mechanisms, Fiji aims to harness the vast potential of its small businesses, ultimately contributing to economic growth and stability.
