Fijian Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) face considerable challenges in expanding beyond local markets due to limited visibility and exposure, which restricts their ability to capitalize on international opportunities. Shaheen Ali, the Permanent Secretary for Trade, highlighted that these enterprises grapple with marketing and logistics, hindering their growth prospects.

To combat these hurdles, the Fijian government is actively pursuing initiatives to support MSMEs. Ali emphasized enhancing digital marketing and e-commerce skills as strategies to reduce costs associated with breaching international markets. He noted, “This will address some of those challenges, whether it’s exposing your products or having a physical shop in a metropolitan area like Suva.” Additionally, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Manoa Kamikamica, encouraged local entrepreneurs to utilize available governmental resources and support.

The government’s efforts aim to modernize platforms needed for global trade, including improving digital payment systems and logistical frameworks essential for MSME success. This approach supports a wider initiative to create a resilient ecosystem for Fijian goods, particularly in niche markets such as handicrafts and natural cosmetics.

Furthermore, discussions led by Watisoni Nata, Chair of the MSME Council, have pointed to the need for increased awareness surrounding export border requirements, which can serve as significant barriers for businesses. By bolstering education on compliance and logistics, the government seeks to unlock the immense potential surrounding Fijian small businesses, contributing significantly to the nation’s economic growth and stability.

As Fiji embarks on these initiatives, the aim is to enhance the capabilities of MSMEs in navigating the complexities of global markets. With advancements in digital infrastructure and a focus on collaborative support, there is an optimistic outlook for Fijian enterprises. This commitment not only seeks to elevate local businesses but also embodies a dedication to fostering resilience and innovation throughout the economy. The future looks promising for Fijian MSMEs as they work towards achieving greater visibility and engagement in the international arena.
