Micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) are pivotal to Fiji’s transition towards a circular economy, as emphasized by Permanent Secretary for Trade, Shaheen Ali, during the BAF MSME Conference 2025 held in Nadi. This conference highlights the theme: “Sustainable Tides: Connecting MSMEs for a Circular Economy,” calling for MSMEs to play an active role in reshaping Fiji’s economic landscape into a more sustainable model.

Fiji has already established a National Circular Economy Framework and Roadmap under the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, focusing on transitioning from a linear to a circular economy. This initiative is aimed at maximizing resource use while minimizing environmental impact, preserving biodiversity and cultural heritage, and addressing climate change challenges.

Mr. Ali pointed out that studies indicate MSMEs are often the most innovative and effective advocates of circular economy principles. He outlined the approach, suggesting a comprehensive government-supported strategy that aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He encourages MSMEs to mainstream circular economy practices into their business operations, pitching environmentally-friendly products to increasingly conscious consumers.

Vinay Narsey, President of the Fiji Commerce and Employers Federation, echoed this sentiment by underscoring the need for a dynamic shift towards sustainable, regenerative business practices. He highlighted the significance of the conference as a platform for MSMEs to connect with international experts, collaborate, and acquire practical knowledge, fostering a more cohesive and sustainably driven economy.

The two-day conference aimed to bolster the MSME sector by providing opportunities for learning and networking, reflecting collective efforts towards a resilient, inclusive economic future for Fiji. As optimistic developments unfold, there is potential for MSMEs to lead Fiji into a promising and sustainable economic horizon.

This focus on the circular economy presents hope that by collaborating and adopting sustainable practices, Fiji can create an economy that not only thrives in the present but is also prepared to meet future challenges effectively.
