The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) is intensifying its commitment to ensuring safer and more sustainable maritime operations across the nation, according to acting CEO Iliesa Batisaresare. In his statements, Mr. Batisaresare highlighted that MSAF performs roughly 1,460 vessel surveys each year and conduct 10 port state inspections monthly, reflecting a robust enforcement strategy over the past five years.

In 2025, MSAF recorded nearly 60,000 vessel clearances and approximately 7,000 checks, further underscoring the authority’s proactive approach to maritime safety. “Regulation remains central to maritime safety,” stated Mr. Batisaresare, emphasizing that MSAF is crucial in marine and environmental protection through its efforts in response and pollution monitoring, ensuring that maritime transport is not only safe but also environmentally responsible.

Mr. Batisaresare noted that Fiji is home to around 99 lighthouses, many of which have undergone rehabilitation with support from donors. He also mentioned MSAF’s role in enforcing various international maritime conventions ratified by Fiji, ensuring that global maritime standards are upheld through national legislation. Out of the 59 conventions established by the International Maritime Organisation, Fiji has ratified 26.

Moreover, he stressed the importance of interagency collaboration, particularly in regions where enforcement is limited. MSAF is committed to promoting cleaner and more efficient shipping practices by enhancing operational improvements, upskilling personnel, and aligning with advanced low-carbon maritime technologies and fuels.

Recognizing existing gaps in verified maritime activity, MSAF is making strides to enhance data systems and create a maritime greenhouse gas inventory to support future decarbonization initiatives. Mr. Batisaresare affirmed that MSAF aims to reinforce regulatory effectiveness while adapting to emerging challenges such as climate change, an increasing demand for transport, and the urgent need for decarbonization.

These concerted efforts by MSAF position Fiji’s maritime sector as a safe, credible, and resilient entity, fostering a sustainable future in maritime operations. The outlook remains positive, as continued dedication to safety, environmental stewardship, and regulatory adherence can lead to a thriving maritime industry.
