The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) has firmly rejected allegations made by George Goundar, the managing director of Goundar Shipping, regarding the alleged clearance of an intoxicated captain to operate a vessel from Ellington Wharf in Rakiraki. Goundar voiced these concerns during his appearance before the Standing Committee on Economic Affairs related to the Employment Relations (Amendment) Bill.

In response to Goundar’s claims, MSAF emphasized its commitment to maintaining strict safety regulations for maritime operations. The Authority stated that it ensures all vessels operate under safe and regulated conditions and that no clearance is granted contrary to established fitness-for-duty standards. This includes rigorous checks on all crew members before they can operate a vessel.

Furthermore, Goundar raised issues concerning the training and certification of seafarers. MSAF countered this assertion, insisting that all certifications are awarded in complete adherence to both international standards and regulations. The Authority reiterated that its certification process guarantees that all seafarers are qualified and fully competent for their roles.

MSAF reaffirmed its dedication to upholding the highest standards of maritime safety, assuring that it will continue to enforce regulations designed to protect the safety of vessels, crews, and passengers across Fiji’s waters. This commitment is crucial in fostering a safe maritime environment, ensuring trust and confidence in Fiji’s shipping industry.
