In the vibrant music scene of Fiji, aspiring rapper Sam Kurukitoga, known as Mr Sam, is making a name for himself by using hip-hop to express real-life stories and connect with his audience. Originating from Naloto in Verata, Tailevu, with maternal ties to Bagasau in Cakaudrove, Vanua Levu, Mr Sam’s journey in music began when his grandmother would take him to church to sing hymns as a young boy.

His passion for music deepened during his time at Queen Victoria School, where he formed an acapella group named Jehovah’s Vocal in year ten. As he continued his musical journey into university, he stayed true to his roots, contributing musically during Sunday services.

Growing up in Nadera significantly influenced Mr Sam’s music style, leading him to create a unique sound that resonated with many in Fiji. Inspired by the late iconic singer George Veikoso, he has since cultivated a musical identity that speaks to the experiential realities of many young Fijians. His lyrics address themes such as perseverance, self-belief, and everyday challenges, making his work both relatable and impactful.

Balancing his career and family life, Mr Sam is married with three young children. He acknowledges the challenges of juggling music production and parenting, often finding himself recording a verse while caring for his daughter. Despite his busy lifestyle, he stresses the importance of budgeting and focuses on maintaining a careful shopping routine for his family. He is knowledgeable about supermarket deals and prioritizes purchasing quality food items that are healthy for his children.

As Christmas approaches, Mr Sam emphasizes the significance of spending quality time with family. He has a special gig planned in Nadi, where he intends to share the joy of music with his loved ones. His Christmas message is one of gratitude and practicality, urging others to be mindful of their spending and to be thankful for the time spent together, regardless of the feast on the table.

Mr Sam’s journey in music serves as an inspiring testament to the power of storytelling through art, and his commitment to his family and community makes his outlook on life hopeful and uplifting. His dedication not only enriches the local music landscape but also fosters a spirit of connection and gratitude during the festive season.
