Fiji’s Mobile Phone Surge: More Devices Than People!

Fiji has surpassed its total population with the number of mobile phones in the country. Recent statistics from telecommunication providers indicate that there were 1.31 million mobile phones in Fiji last year.

Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru noted that this figure suggests many individuals own two or three phones. “Our population has not reached the one million mark,” he stated. It’s also highlighted that there are individuals living below the poverty line who own mobile phones.

Saukuru emphasized that young people make up the largest group of users and are actively involved in shaping global digital trends. He remarked, “It is imperative to recognize that youths remain an essential demographic group in harnessing the transformative power of technologies to address global challenges.”

Moreover, he pointed out the significant potential of youth in utilizing digital tools for sustainable development and in creating opportunities for a better future for upcoming generations.
