CCEP Fiji-based Mission Pacific, a pioneering beverage container recycling initiative, is furthering its commitment to environmental sustainability by expanding its PET plastic bottle and can collection efforts nationwide. In partnership with FIJI Water and Motibhai Group, Mission Pacific has played a crucial role in Fiji’s recycling landscape since 1999.

The initiative aims to enhance accessibility and convenience for Fijians to recycle. Currently, cash refunds of five cents per bottle are provided at three designated collection points, with the program recently launching its first Return & Earn Centre outside its main depot network in Sigatoka. This center, managed by the Sigatoka Town Council, symbolizes a significant step toward integrating recycling into local communities.

Additionally, Mission Pacific’s mobile collection caravan has been actively participating in local events and festivals to promote recycling, helping to engage the community and raise awareness about the importance of recycling efforts. In 2024, the program collected and exported an impressive 140 tonnes of PET plastic for recycling, reinforcing the notion that these materials should be viewed as valuable resources rather than waste.

CCEP Fiji is also exploring collaborations with major resorts and working to expand the number of permanent collection facilities throughout the country. Their commitment extends beyond container collection; CCEP Fiji has invested in regular employee-led beach cleanups and habitat restoration. The company has also made significant strides in renewable energy, implementing a 1.1-megawatt solar system at its Suva manufacturing facility.

These efforts reflect a growing awareness and action towards sustainability in Fiji, with the positive potential for increased community involvement and environmental stewardship. As initiatives like Mission Pacific gain momentum, they set a hopeful precedent for future environmental efforts across the Pacific region.

This ongoing journey towards sustainability not only highlights the vital need for environmentally responsible practices but also fosters community engagement and a cleaner future for generations to come.
