Fiji’s Minister Urges Online Kindness to Curb Social Media Abuse This Christmas

The Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran, has urged Fijians to combat the rising tide of judgment and abuse on social media, emphasizing that such online negativity is detrimental to communities and often stems from “deep personal insecurity” among those who engage in it. Her comments came during the Christmas Lighting Ceremony at Shangri-La Yanuca Island Fiji, where she highlighted the importance of practicing compassion and kindness during the festive season.

Kiran urged the public to avoid giving “oxygen” to abusive behaviors and called on families to confront and address harmful conduct. “Spread kindness and compassion online,” she said, encouraging individuals to support those who may be abusing others by urging them to seek help and report all forms of violence, both online and offline.

The Minister noted a troubling rise in cases of child neglect, especially during Christmas, which is often accompanied by increased violence, alcohol-related issues, and unsafe behaviors. She called upon families and communities to establish “clear ground rules” for safe holiday celebrations, stressing that no form of harm towards others—be it physical abuse or emotional distress—is acceptable.

Kiran also encouraged parents to dedicate quality time to their children, emphasize nutritious meals during the holidays, and revive storytelling traditions that instill values and resilience. “Ask children not only what career they want but what act of kindness they practiced today,” she said, highlighting the importance of nurturing good human beings.

Moreover, she called on organizations and communities to support initiatives that contribute to social upliftment, such as the programs at Shangri-La’s Treasure House Children’s Home. Kiran praised the critical role that resorts can play through their corporate social responsibility efforts in environmental protection, education support, and community engagement, noting that these initiatives are vital for building stronger communities.

This message of compassion, resilience, and community support during the holiday season resonates as a hopeful reminder of the power of collective kindness in countering negativity and nurturing a healthier society.
