Fiji’s Minister for Sugar and Multi-Ethnic Affairs, Charan Jeath Singh, is embroiled in serious allegations following a civil lawsuit filed by his brother, Jagjeet Singh. The lawsuit accuses Charan of engaging in questionable practices concerning his ownership interests in the family businesses, Gurbachan Singh and Company Limited, and Soap and Allied Industries Fiji Limited.

Jagjeet Singh’s claims are grave, alleging that Charan held a meeting without proper consultation with the shareholders, forged his brother’s signature on fictitious meeting minutes, and improperly appointed his wife, Swaran Nandita Singh, as a Director of the said companies even though she is not a shareholder. Additionally, the lawsuit contends that Charan obtained loans amounting to $3 million from Westpac and ANZ Bank without notifying other shareholders, and he has not shared rental income since 2012, nor communicated about the business accounts with them.

Represented by attorney Abhay Kumar Singh, Jagjeet seeks to void Charan’s alleged actions and is also suing Swaran Singh and the companies’ lawyer, Hemendra Nagin, for their roles in preparing supposedly fraudulent documents for banking purposes.

The case has progressed, with Charan granted 28 days to respond, and a hearing set for July 4 where both sides will present their submissions.

This situation underscores critical issues related to corporate governance and accountability, particularly given Charan’s significant position in the government. The allegations highlight the necessity for transparency in not just business conduct but also in public service. The outcome of this lawsuit may not only clarify these serious accusations but could also initiate a push towards promoting integrity within governance, encouraging public officials to embrace practices that align with the public’s interest.

The ongoing developments bring a sense of hope for potential reforms and enhanced accountability within Fiji’s business landscape and governmental practices in the future.
