Fiji’s Minister Faces Backlash: Will Action Be Taken?

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka avoided answering whether any measures would be taken against the Minister for Women, Lynda Tabuya, for insubordination. Ms. Tabuya had made public remarks advocating for the reintroduction of the death penalty as a deterrent for drug criminals, a topic that should have been addressed within the Cabinet first.

Earlier this week, Mr. Rabuka mentioned that the Cabinet would handle the situation regarding Ms. Tabuya’s actions. She has a reputation for disregarding Cabinet protocols, which has led to calls for her removal from her ministerial position.

In a recent interview, Mr. Rabuka expressed that he did not want to jump to conclusions about the matter. “The issue of Lynda Tabuya has not been dealt with,” he stated. “I have not been in Fiji long enough to address the issue. It was supposed to be dealt with by the Cabinet yesterday.”

Mr. Rabuka noted that it was regrettable Ms. Tabuya expressed her views publicly before any Cabinet discussions had taken place.
