The national minimum wage in Fiji has officially increased to $5.00 per hour, effective from midnight. This marks a 50-cent rise from the previous rate of $4.50, which was implemented on August 1, 2024. The Ministry of Employment, Productivity & Industrial Relations indicated that this adjustment was made following extensive discussions with workers, employers, and social partners. They are committed to regular assessments to ensure wages remain fair and aligned with the country’s economic conditions.
Minister Agni Deo Singh has reiterated the government’s strong commitment to enforcing compliance, ensuring that every worker receives their rightful pay. He stated, “A fair wage means a stronger workforce and a better Fiji for all.”
This increase is part of a phased approach, with another scheduled rise of 50 cents anticipated on April 1, 2025, which will affect both formal and informal sectors. Employers are obligated to update their wage records to reflect these changes and are required to post written notices about the new rates in their workplaces.
In addition to these wage increases, the Ministry’s Labour Standards and Compliance Team will continue to conduct inspections to guarantee compliance with the new wage regulations. Employers who fail to adhere to these guidelines may face significant penalties, including fines and possible imprisonment.
