The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) has officially launched its 1/25 Basic Recruit Course (BRC), welcoming 151 new recruits who will embark on a 12-week intensive training program at the Force Training Group (FTG) in Nasinu. The ceremony took place this morning at Duavata Hall, where Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel Jeremaia Waqanisau addressed the recruits.

LTCOL Waqanisau commended the recruits on their selection and acknowledged the support provided by instructors from the New Zealand Defence Force, emphasizing the collaborative spirit in ensuring quality training. He urged the recruits to adopt attitudes of discipline, humility, and resilience as they prepare for the challenges ahead. “Come with an empty glass,” he said, encouraging them to be ready to grow, learn, and transform throughout their training.

The BRC is designed to develop foundational combat skills, discipline, and crucial leadership values, all of which are essential to the expectations of Fiji’s military personnel. Drawing from the proud legacy of the Fiji Military Forces during World War II, Waqanisau highlighted the strength, skill, and bravery historically exhibited by Fijian soldiers in combat.

This new course follows the recent graduation of the 1/23 Officer Cadet Course and the 1/24 Territorial Officers Bridging Course, which took place on November 19, 2024. During that ceremony, Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration Pio Tikoduadua praised the new officers for their commitment to uphold the traditions of the RFMF while adapting to the needs of the nation.

The RFMF’s ongoing efforts—including the recent openings of new recruitment avenues and enhanced training programs—underscore a hopeful future for Fiji’s military. These initiatives aim not only to develop capable leaders but also to ensure that the military is well-prepared to serve and protect the nation’s values effectively. As the new recruits begin their journey, they carry with them the potential to foster strength and integrity within the ranks of the RFMF.
