The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) has expressed a strong commitment to transparency, accountability, and civilian supremacy as the nation embarks on a journey of national reconciliation. In a recent statement, the RFMF emphasized that it will “not remain prisoners of its past,” acknowledging the public’s concerns and views with seriousness.
The military outlined its renewed mission to restore integrity and trust within the RFMF for the benefit of all Fijians. Acknowledging historical grievances while admitting that it has sometimes strayed from its intended purpose, the RFMF now aims to foster trust and partnerships with communities across Fiji.
Addressing the deep-seated emotions stemming from past turmoil, the RFMF stated that these feelings should not impede the collective journey toward healing and national unity. Importantly, they clarified that their reconciliation efforts will not be a means to evade accountability or circumvent legal processes. Instead, it is a public acknowledgment of previous actions, marking a crucial first step towards regaining the trust of the people they serve.
The RFMF reaffirmed its commitment to upholding civilian control, labeling this principle as the essential foundation of Fiji’s democracy. They stated, “Breaking the cycle of military intervention is an absolute imperative for a stable, prosperous, and united Fiji.” The RFMF is dedicated to changing any lingering perceptions of the military as an oppressive force, aiming instead to position itself as protectors and partners of the people.
Army Commander Major General Jone Kalouniwai echoed the necessity of courage and inclusive dialogue in addressing the country’s wounds. Drawing inspiration from Nelson Mandela, he emphasized that true freedom involves not just liberation from constraints but also the respect and enhancement of others’ freedoms.
As Fiji moves forward, the RFMF seeks public understanding, patience, and partnership to build a future that honors freedom, respect, and trust. Kalouniwai concluded by reaffirming the RFMF’s unwavering dedication to reconciliation and democratic values while emphasizing the importance of serving all Fijians with integrity and honor. This initiative signifies a hopeful step towards a more united and reconciled Fiji, opening the door for collaboration between the military and civilian sectors.
