Personnel dismissed following the military coup in 2000 may be welcomed back into the Republic of the Fiji Military Forces (RFMF). Commander Major General Ro Jone Kalouniwai stated that the RFMF is exploring this possibility as part of the reconciliation efforts.
He highlighted that during the 2000 coup, several young soldiers found themselves in unfortunate circumstances and faced severe penalties, including incarceration for six to eight years. The recent reconciliation event in Vanua Levu emphasized the plight of these individuals, many of whom are still relatively young or just over the age of 40.
Kalouniwai noted the focus on reintegrating soldiers under the age of 55 into the RFMF, framing this move as a form of compensation. Additionally, he mentioned the importance of providing support for the families and loved ones impacted by the events surrounding the coup. He reaffirmed the RFMF’s dedication to fulfilling the reconciliation process.
