Fiji’s Military on the Brink: Commander Reveals Tensions Post-Election

The aftermath of the 2022 General Election was a critical time for the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), according to Major-General Ro Jone Kalouniwai, the RFMF Commander. He stated in an interview with The Lens@177 that it was the senior command that “managed to keep things together” during this period.

Kalouniwai revealed that former police commissioner Sitiveni Qiliho had reached out to him, requesting the deployment of troops due to concerns about instability stemming from the election results. In response, Kalouniwai assured that he would keep the troops stationed at the Queen Elizabeth Barracks (QEB).

He reflected on 2022 as a significant year that presented an opportunity for the military to foster reconciliation and address past grievances. Kalouniwai emphasized that several factors must be taken into account before the RFMF considers intervening in the governance of the country.

He explained that intervention by the RFMF is contingent upon a disruption in the existing governance framework. When the Commissioner calls for the RFMF’s involvement, they will conduct an assessment of the situation to determine the necessity of their presence.

Kalouniwai highlighted the distinct roles of the RFMF compared to the police, indicating that the military must evaluate the overall environment. He noted the importance of assessing the law-and-order situation, including whether there are acts of violence, property destruction, or significant public unrest that would warrant the RFMF’s intervention.
