The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) has expressed its full support for the conclusions of the recent National Security and Defence Review (NSDR). This review emphasizes essential values such as transparency, accountability, and cooperation as cornerstones for establishing a robust security framework for Fiji.

Major General Jone Kalouniwai, Commander of the RFMF, noted that the review signifies the government’s commitment to modernizing Fiji’s security structure. This modernization aims to effectively tackle emerging challenges, including climate change, transnational crime, and shifting regional political landscapes. He emphasized that the NSDR promotes a proactive, community-oriented approach to national security, with the RFMF ready to realign its strategic goals to match this vision.

The RFMF has identified critical focus areas stemming from the review:

– Strengthening National Resilience to Climate Change: The RFMF will continue its role in humanitarian assistance and disaster response, acknowledging that climate-related threats represent significant security challenges for Fiji.

– Enhancing Public Trust and Accountability: The RFMF aims to foster trust by collaborating with civil society organizations (CSOs) and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), utilizing increased transparency and public engagement to mend past divisions and establish accountability.

– Supporting Human Rights and Civilian Oversight: Consistent with the NSDR’s suggestion for enhanced democratic accountability, the RFMF will facilitate civilian oversight and ensure that personnel engage in regular training focused on human rights and community service.

Major General Kalouniwai highlighted that the RFMF would play an active role in developing the upcoming National Security Strategy (NSS), collaborating with various government agencies to safeguard Fiji’s integrity, prosperity, and sovereignty.

He reiterated the RFMF’s commitment to serving the Fijian populace with professionalism and respect, stating confidence that the recommendations outlined in the NSDR will bolster national unity and resilience, thereby fostering a secure environment conducive to Fiji’s development and regional peace.

In summary, the RFMF’s endorsement of the NSDR illustrates a comprehensive effort to evolve Fiji’s national security in alignment with global challenges, particularly in areas related to climate change and human rights. This progressive approach aims to build a more inclusive and resilient society, signaling a hopeful future for the nation amid complex regional dynamics.
