The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) remains steadfast in its commitment to reconciliation, despite facing criticism on social media regarding its initiatives, including recent engagements with the Great Council of Chiefs. Commander Major-General Ro Jone Kalouniwai emphasized the importance of these efforts in light of Fiji’s complex history.

Acknowledging the origins of the negative sentiments, Maj-Gen Kalouniwai stated, “We understand where the negative views are coming from,” underscoring the challenges the nation has faced. He reinforced that reconciliation is essential for the country’s progress, insisting, “It is important that we continue with reconciliation.”

Additionally, President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu lauded the military’s outreach to the Great Council of Chiefs, characterizing it as an act of both humility and strength. This sentiment reflects a broader appreciation within the government for striving toward unity.

The RFMF’s collaboration with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission marks a proactive step towards creating a structured approach to healing and reconciliation. Maj-Gen Kalouniwai shared that discussions with the commission have been fruitful and will continue as part of their ongoing efforts.

Expressing optimism in the face of adversity, he remarked, “While there is negativity, we believe this process can help the country as a whole.” He also urged the public to respect freedom of expression and called for patience, hinting at a hopeful future: “We will reach the end of the tunnel.” The military’s engagement in dialogue exemplifies a commitment to healing, fostering hope for a united Fiji.
