The Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), Jone Kalouniwai, recently took to social media to express his heartfelt reflections on his family’s involvement in mentoring the youth of the Suva 4th Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He described this engagement as a “sacred privilege,” having spent the past three weeks walking alongside these young individuals as part of a four-year program centered around studying the Old Testament.
In his post, Commander Kalouniwai shared his experiences over the past two years, where he and his wife have dedicated themselves to serving 23 enthusiastic youths from various neighborhoods, including Raiwaqa, Raiwai, Toorak, Flagstaff, and Domain. He expressed admiration for their commitment to the teachings of the Savior, highlighting their dedication to attending early-morning classes from 6 AM to 7 AM before starting their school day.
He beautifully captured the spirit of their dedication by stating, “There is a holy beauty in the sacrifices these children make, rising in the quiet hours to seek the Lord.” The Commander also mentioned how his family participates actively by picking up the children from their homes and preparing meals for them, calling it a “labour of love.”
In a time marked by complexities and uncertainties, Commander Kalouniwai emphasized the importance of community-building efforts. He encouraged others to reflect on ways to contribute positively, focusing on instilling faith and values in the younger generation.
Ultimately, he expressed that this commitment to service brings his family “the greatest joy and deepest peace,” as they strive to support and uplift young people through faith, leadership, and care. This initiative not only nurtures the spiritual growth of the youth but also fosters a sense of community and connection during challenging times, reinforcing the impact of mentorship and support in shaping a brighter future.
