The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) has committed to respecting the independence of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) and actively engaging in the process of uncovering the truth about the past. TRC Chairperson Dr. Marcus Brand acknowledged the crucial role of the RFMF in the narrative the Commission seeks to reveal.
In a conversation with FijiLive, Dr. Brand noted a meeting with RFMF Commander Major-General Ro Jone Kalouniwai is planned for next week. He emphasized that while the reconciliation process undertaken by the military is generally aligned with the TRC’s mission, it is fundamentally an internal initiative aimed at addressing previous conflicts within the military ranks and communities affected by military coups.
Dr. Brand expressed interest in learning from the RFMF’s reconciliation exercises, hinting at the potentially unique insights that could arise from their internal experiences. He stated, “I think everyone in society who wants to work with truth-telling, reconciliation, and towards the healing of this nation is going in the same direction.”
This cooperative stance highlights the potential for united efforts towards healing and reconciliation in Fiji, offering hope for progress and social cohesion as both bodies work towards addressing the challenges rooted in the nation’s history.
The collaboration aims to create a supportive environment where open discussions can flourish, ultimately contributing to the healing process for the nation. This shared commitment could lead to a more comprehensive understanding and acknowledgment of past injustices, fostering a path toward recovery and national unity.
