The Mercy Commission held a meeting on September 18, 2024, to review mercy petitions submitted by several individuals. The petitioners included Sekina Vosavakatini, Nioni Tagici, James Sanjesh Goundar, Adi Livini Radininausori, John Miller, George Speight, and Shane Stevens.
Following their discussions, the Commission made recommendations for mercy, which were approved by the President of Fiji under Section 119(5) of the Constitution. Pardons for all the petitioners were officially granted on September 18, 2024.
Consequently, these individuals were released from custody on September 19, 2024. However, the pardon for James Sanjesh Goundar, who died on September 6 at the Minimum Corrections Center, came too late for him.
The Fiji Correction Service and the government emphasize their commitment to justice, rehabilitation, and the rule of law, with the Mercy Commission playing a crucial role in carefully considering each clemency petition based on individual circumstances.
