Fiji’s Mercy Commission Grants Pardons: A Controversial Decision

The Mercy Commission held a meeting on September 18, 2024, to review mercy petitions from several individuals. The following names were considered: Sekina Vosavakatini, Nioni Tagici, James Sanjesh Goundar, Adi Livini Radininausori, John Miller, George Speight, and Shane Stevens.

After careful deliberation, the Commission made recommendations for mercy, which were approved by the President of Fiji, who acted under Section 119(5) of the Constitution. The pardons for the individuals were officially granted on September 18, 2024.

Consequently, all of the named individuals were released from custody on September 19, 2024. However, James Sanjesh Goundar, who passed away on September 6 while incarcerated at the Minimum Corrections Center, did not benefit from the pardon.

The Fiji Correction Service and the government emphasize their commitment to justice, rehabilitation, and the rule of law, highlighting the important role of the Mercy Commission in carefully considering clemency petitions and the specific circumstances of each case.
