The Fiji men’s rugby sevens team is off to a strong start in the HSBC 7s series, currently sitting at the top of the standings. Under the guidance of coach Osea Kolinisau, the team secured their position by winning the Dubai 7s tournament, triumphing over Spain with a score of 19-5 in the final. This victory marks a significant achievement for Fiji, who leads the series with 20 points and has ended a two-year winless streak across 22 tournaments.
Currently, Spain follows closely in second place, trailing by two points. The top five teams also include Argentina, New Zealand, and France, while the USA finds themselves at the bottom of the standings.
On the women’s front, the Fijiana team is positioned in 12th place, having earned just one point following a 10th place finish in Dubai. Australia leads the women’s standings, with New Zealand and France right behind.
Looking ahead, both teams will have the opportunity to further their standings as they prepare to compete in the upcoming Cape Town 7s tournament this weekend.
This promising start for the Fijian men’s team not only demonstrates their potential to reclaim their place as a dominant force in rugby sevens, but it also inspires hope for the women’s team to build upon their experience and enhance their performance in future competitions.
