The Ministry of iTaukei Affairs, Culture, Heritage & Arts is in the process of formulating a National Policy aimed at recognizing and supporting Fiji’s Melanesian community. The announcement was made by Hon. Ifereimi Vasu, the Minister for iTaukei Affairs, during a groundbreaking seminar commemorating the 160th anniversary of the arrival of Melanesian laborers in Fiji.

Minister Vasu emphasized the importance of this seminar, encouraging the Melanesian Council to develop an engaging and productive program that would foster community connections and set the stage for future aspirations. He highlighted that this initiative represents a significant milestone, offering long-overdue recognition to the contributions and sacrifices made by Melanesian descendants.

The seminar, held at the Great Council of Chiefs Talanoa Lounge in Draiba, Nasese, aims to enhance cultural inclusion and foster a unified national identity. The commemoration will conclude with a significant event at the Suva Foreshore, presided over by Fiji’s Prime Minister.

This initiative is a hopeful step towards strengthening cultural ties and ensuring that the rich history and contributions of the Melanesian community are celebrated and integrated into Fiji’s national identity. The recognition and support of diverse communities within a nation can lead to greater unity and understanding, paving the way for a more inclusive future.
