The Ministry of iTaukei Affairs, Culture, Heritage & Arts is actively creating a National Policy to acknowledge and support Fiji’s Melanesian community. Honorable Ifereimi Vasu, the Minister for iTaukei Affairs, inaugurated the first seminar dedicated to celebrating the 160th anniversary of Melanesian laborers’ arrival in Fiji.
During the event, Minister Vasu encouraged the Melanesian Council to develop an engaging and meaningful program that fosters community engagement and facilitates discussions on future aspirations. He emphasized that this seminar marks a significant milestone in recognizing the contributions and sacrifices of Melanesian descendants.
The seminar, held at the Great Council of Chiefs Talanoa Lounge in Draiba, Nasese, aims to enhance cultural inclusion and strengthen national identity. The commemoration will conclude with a ceremony at the Suva Foreshore, featuring the Prime Minister of Fiji.
This initiative represents an important step toward acknowledging the contributions of the Melanesian community in Fiji, fostering a greater sense of belonging and collaboration among all citizens.
