The current shortage of medication at Fiji Pharmaceuticals Biomedical Services (FPBS) is primarily due to disruptions in the global supply chain rather than financial limitations, as clarified by Permanent Secretary for Health Dr. Jemesa Tudravu. He emphasized that since Fiji does not produce its own medicines, it must rely heavily on imports, which are impacted by various complications in the supply chain.

Dr. Tudravu explained that despite an increase in the government’s funding for medicines and medical products, delays in receipt of supplies stem from issues related to transportation, documentation, and unexpected disruptions such as global port strikes. He stated, “It’s the transportation, the port, right from the manufacture of the products and how they are transported, whether by air or sea, and the clearance process.” Such delays can be compounded by any disruptions that occur internationally.

The health department maintains regular communication with suppliers to address issues as they arise and to seek alternative solutions for prompt supply delivery. Dr. Tudravu also noted the importance of this ongoing dialogue, even across different time zones, to minimize delays. In terms of medical testing, private hospitals are utilized when necessary, with costs varying based on agreements due to unavailable supplies.

Dr. Tudravu expressed gratitude that the government has made additional budgetary provisions for medical supplies this year, which bodes well for future procurement. The Health Ministry is actively working with suppliers to find alternative sources to tackle the ongoing shortages. He underscored the commitment of the health team, stating, “It’s a 24-hour operation to overcome these challenges.”

This situation highlights the resilience and resourcefulness of Fiji’s health officials as they navigate global supply chain issues, ensuring that they seek solutions diligently. Despite the current challenges, the proactive steps being taken could lead to improved access to necessary medications in the future.

In summary, the FPBS is facing medication shortages due to global supply chain complications rather than financial issues, with ongoing efforts from the government to secure alternative sources in a timely manner. The increased budget allocations signal a positive commitment to overcoming these challenges.
