The Fiji Institute of Medical Laboratory Sciences is urging the government to reconsider the recent decision to limit approved overtime payments for Allied Health Band F positions in the Ministry of Health to just six months. Jignesh Sharma, the institute’s president, expressed appreciation for the ministry’s approval of these payments but raised concerns regarding the temporary nature of the solution.
According to an internal circular issued by Dr. Jemesa Tudravu, the permanent secretary of the ministry, the overtime payments will be effective for only six months starting from November 7, 2024. Mr. Sharma highlighted that this approach may not adequately address ongoing staffing challenges in medical laboratories, particularly in sub-divisional locations that often operate with inadequate personnel.
He emphasized that many laboratories are already struggling with staffing issues, having only a few professionals on duty. The institute believes that a more permanent solution is necessary to ensure adequate staffing and to avoid the same complications resurfacing after the six-month period.
