A twelve-member Fiji Emergency Medical Assistance Team (FEMAT) is set to depart for Vanuatu tomorrow to aid in relief efforts following recent crises. During a farewell gathering, Dr. Jemesa Tudravu, the Permanent Secretary for Health, expressed gratitude to the team for their willingness to represent Fiji in its commitment to assist neighboring Pacific nations.
“You are not only representing the Ministry of Health out there, but also the entire nation of Fiji,” Dr. Tudravu stated. He acknowledged the challenges team members face in leaving their families and loved ones to fulfill this vital role.
FEMAT holds the distinction of being the first WHO-verified international Emergency Medical Team in the Pacific, equipped and trained to respond effectively to emergencies and natural disasters both in Fiji and across the region. The team is self-sufficient and can be deployed in times of crisis, thanks to the support of the Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
The FEMAT team previously provided assistance in Vanuatu earlier this year after Tropical Cyclones Kevin and Judy caused significant damage, demonstrating their commitment to supporting their Pacific neighbors in times of need.
This mission exemplifies the spirit of solidarity and cooperation that defines nations in the Pacific, showcasing Fiji’s readiness to lend a hand to its allies in difficult times.
In a world often filled with challenges, this emergency response initiative serves as a reminder of the kindness and support that countries can extend to one another, fostering hope for recovery and resilience in the face of adversity.
