During a recent panel discussion hosted by the Asia Foundation on Tolerance, editors from prominent media organizations in Fiji expressed the critical link between freedom of expression and societal tolerance. The discussion, which centered on the theme of “Sustaining traditional practices in a modern world,” highlighted the urgent need for a culture of acceptance to uphold media freedoms amidst the challenges facing journalists in today’s rapidly changing landscape.

Fred Wesley, editor-in-chief of The Fiji Times, emphasized the inherent diversity of Fiji’s population, which comprises various ethnicities, genders, and religions. Despite the country’s multicultural identity and the façade of tolerance displayed in daily life—such as the communal celebrations of festivals like Christmas, Diwali, and Prophet Muhammad’s birthday—Wesley pointed out the underlying issues of intolerance that persist, particularly regarding media operations.

Wesley recounted the suppression of media freedom over three decades, particularly during the last thirteen years of military rule, where stringent laws were enacted to control media narratives. These regulations often stifled independent reporting, forcing journalists to practice self-censorship to avoid penalties related to content deemed against national interests.

Despite the oppressive atmosphere in the media landscape, Wesley conveyed a hopeful outlook for Fiji, asserting that the nation is fundamentally a tolerant society. He noted that Fiji is fortunate to maintain peace in contrast to regions like Ukraine and Sudan, which are embroiled in conflicts exacerbated by intolerance. However, he cautioned that this peace is precarious and must be actively nurtured by promoting respect and acceptance across all societal segments.

Wesley argued for the necessity of independent media as a cornerstone for democracy, essential for accountability and the representation of diverse viewpoints. He called for reforms to the country’s media laws to enhance transparency and provide better protection for journalists, while also advocating for increased media literacy, particularly among the youth, to foster an informed populace capable of engaging with complex socio-political challenges.

In conclusion, Wesley expressed his gratitude for being part of a society poised for growth. He encouraged the people of Fiji to continue on a path guided by tolerance, resilience, and a commitment to the truth, reiterating that it is the collective effort of the citizens that will further enhance Fiji’s status as a beacon of hope in the Pacific.

This discussion calls attention to the importance of nurturing a culture of acceptance and openness, paving the way for a more inclusive society, where media plays a pivotal role in fostering dialogue and understanding among its diverse population. It’s a reminder that the journey toward a tolerant society requires ongoing commitment and vigilance.
