Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has underscored the evolving nature of the media landscape while celebrating World Press Freedom Day. He recognizes the increasing challenges faced by journalists and emphasizes the importance of a free and independent press in a democratic society. Rabuka expressed gratitude to media professionals, including reporters, broadcasters, and support staff, for their dedication and resilience.

Reflecting on the past, he noted that just over two years earlier, freedom of expression was significantly compromised under the previous government due to the Media Industry Development Authority (MIDA) Act, which instilled fear among journalists through potential prosecution and heavy penalties. Rabuka’s Coalition Government has since abolished this act, marking a pivotal shift towards enhancing media freedoms.

In his address, Rabuka reaffirmed the government’s commitment to upholding the values of free expression and press freedom. He highlighted the importance of recognizing journalists’ contributions to society and the need for a supportive environment for truth-telling. Additionally, he announced the opening of the Public Service Broadcast Grant to more broadcasters, reiterating that every effort will be made to promote national unity through essential public information.

Rabuka called on both mainstream and social media practitioners to exercise their rights responsibly, encouraging a culture where freedom of speech is paired with accountability. He articulated solidarity with those who strive for truth and transparency, signifying a hopeful future for media freedoms in Fiji, which can lead to a more informed and engaged citizenry.

Overall, this celebration of World Press Freedom Day serves as a reminder of the ongoing journey towards ensuring a robust and independent media landscape, where the stewardship of journalistic integrity can flourish. This commitment not only enhances democracy but also fosters greater societal understanding and participation in governance.
