The marriage rate in Fiji is on the decline, a trend that reflects a significant shift in the priorities of the nation’s youth. Many young Fijians are now favoring education, career development, and financial stability over traditional commitments such as marriage. This change in behavior was emphasized by Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs, Lenora Qereqeretabua, during a recent panel discussion on reproductive justice at the University of the South Pacific.

Data reveals that Fiji registered only 6,470 marriages in 2024, a decrease from nearly 9,500 in 2016, illustrating a broader trend of declining marriage rates in the Pacific region. The crude marriage rate has also dropped from 10.8 per 1,000 individuals in 2016 to 7.2 in 2024, as reported by the Fiji Bureau of Statistics.

Qereqeretabua noted several factors contributing to this trend, including economic pressures such as the rising cost of living and the quest for job security. Furthermore, increasing gender equality has empowered individuals, particularly young women, to take charge of their life choices. With better access to reproductive health services and education, young Fijians are now making more informed and autonomous decisions regarding their relationships.

In light of these developments, the Fijian government has committed substantial resources to support youth education, allocating a historic $153 million for scholarships that will aid over 24,000 students. Enhancements in living allowances and provisions focusing on rural and low-income youth exemplify this support. Qereqeretabua stated that these initiatives signify justice and an investment in the future.

The shifting social landscape also correlates with previous discussions surrounding topics such as rising domestic violence rates and teenage pregnancies. As previously emphasized, fostering community support and schools that address modern challenges can create a healthier environment for relationships and family life.

Looking ahead, the ongoing societal transformation signifies a hopeful future where young individuals prioritize fulfilling lives, resulting in healthier partnerships built on security and mutual respect. The intention behind prioritizing education and career over early marriages can lead to more mature, supportive relationships that enhance the overall well-being of society.
