Fiji has received a substantial enhancement to its maritime security thanks to a $6 million equipment donation from the Japanese government. This handover, part of Japan’s new Official Security Assistance framework, marks the first such support for Fiji, making it a significant event in the bilateral relationship between the two nations.
The Republic of Fiji Navy Commander, Captain Timoci Natuva, voiced his gratitude, stating that the new equipment will significantly bolster their capacity to patrol and protect Fiji’s extensive maritime borders. The Commander emphasized that this support will enable Fijian personnel to perform their roles more effectively, particularly in assisting other agencies with fisheries protection and maritime law enforcement.
The newly provided assets are expected to enhance response times and strengthen operational effectiveness, addressing important issues in areas like fisheries protection and maritime law enforcement. Shunishi Inoue, Director of the Security Cooperation Division of Japan, indicated that the program strives to enhance security cooperation among like-minded nations, reaffirming a collective commitment to better maritime security.
This donation reflects ongoing collaborations between Fiji and Japan, which include previous agreements aimed at disaster response capabilities. For instance, Fiji is also set to enhance its disaster response with a new multipurpose vessel, funded through Japan’s Economic Social Development Programme, which aims to deliver emergency assistance across the island nation.
