Fiji has welcomed a new addition to its maritime fleet with the official arrival of the RFNS Timo, a Guardian-class patrol boat generously gifted by Australia. This event underscores the strong and enduring relationship between the two countries.
During a ceremony in Perth, Fiji’s Minister for Home Affairs, Pio Tikoduadua, expressed sincere gratitude for this significant contribution, alongside Permanent Secretary Mason Smith and Deputy RFMF Commander Humphrey Tawake. Tikoduadua emphasized that the RFNS Timo will enhance Fiji’s capabilities to protect its waters, safeguard natural resources, and ensure regional security.
The new vessel replaces the decommissioned RFNS Puamau, addressing a critical gap in Fiji’s maritime operations. Originally intended for Timor-Leste, the vessel was renamed Timo in honor of Able Seaman Timo Puamau, a Fijian sailor who lost his life during World War II. RFNS Timo joins RFNS Savenaca (401), another Guardian-class patrol boat named in tribute to a World War II Fijian sailor, as part of Fiji’s ongoing effort to bolster maritime security and border protection while preserving its natural environment.
Australia’s Guardian-class Patrol Boat Programme is gaining momentum, having recently delivered its 21st vessel to Tuvalu, with a total of 24 vessels anticipated in the future. Minister Tikoduadua noted that this gesture reflects the deep partnership and shared commitment between Fiji and Australia.
This cooperation not only enhances Fiji’s maritime defense capabilities but also signifies a hopeful step forward in regional security collaboration, fostering a sense of unity and support in the Pacific region.
In summary, the arrival of the RFNS Timo marks a significant advancement for Fiji’s maritime operations and showcases the enduring friendship between Fiji and Australia, as both nations work together to enhance security and protect their shared resources.
