The Ministry of Immigration in Fiji has acknowledged significant gaps in border control operations at the Savusavu port and Nawi Island Marina, both recognized entry points for foreign vessels. Assistant Minister Ratu Rakuita Vakalalabure indicated that the current enforcement measures, relying on police, customs, and immigration officers, are insufficient to manage the surge in yachts and international ships, especially with Fiji’s growing reputation as a yachting destination.

Vakalalabure highlighted that while immigration officers can verify permits, they lack the authority to inspect cargo, a responsibility that falls solely under Customs’ jurisdiction. He called for the establishment of a joint task force to boost border control operations, noting the complex dynamics of Fiji’s extensive maritime borders and the necessity of enhancing security to address potential risks during peak yacht seasons.

“Our capabilities are stretched,” he admitted. “While we are trying our very best, we acknowledge that we cannot cater to all of Fiji’s needs, given its vastness and the vulnerabilities associated with a new marina in Savusavu.” He also raised concerns about the safety of frontline staff and stressed the importance of enforcing correct visa and permit regulations for all sea arrivals.

The Ministry is currently discussing plans to enhance national border surveillance and is reviewing procedures at secondary ports to address these pressing security challenges. This collaborative approach may support a more integrated oversight strategy over the increasing number of international vessels visiting Fiji and ensure that border security remains robust.

In light of warnings about the risks associated with unmonitored maritime activities, it is crucial that authorities adapt to the changing landscape of yachting tourism in Fiji. Effective partnerships and improved inspection processes will be vital to safeguard the nation’s borders while fostering tourism growth.

Fiji has the opportunity to enhance its maritime security measures, turning vulnerabilities into strengths while promoting a safe and welcoming environment for legitimate travelers.
