The Maritime Authority of Fiji (MSAF) is set to enhance its surveillance and inspection efforts at major ports and jetties during the festive season. This initiative will be executed in partnership with other agencies to conduct regular checks, ensuring that vessel operators adhere to safety regulations.

Key safety measures include verifying boat captain certifications, assessing the condition of vessels, and monitoring passenger numbers on board. MSAF’s Chief Executive Officer, Joweli Cawaki, emphasized the authority’s commitment to maintaining a secure maritime environment, particularly during this busy and potentially dangerous time of year.

“By bolstering monitoring and collaborating closely with our partners, we aim to ensure everyone enjoys a safe and festive holiday,” Commander Cawaki stated. MSAF encourages all boat operators and passengers to prioritize safety and follow maritime regulations when planning trips to the outer islands.

With the onset of the cyclone season coinciding with the holidays, extra caution is advised. Commander Cawaki urged the public to remain vigilant and to plan their maritime travels with safety as a priority. He recommended checking weather conditions frequently and being prepared to alter travel plans in response to any negative weather developments.

Moreover, MSAF highlighted the significance of proactive trip planning during this period. As the holiday season aligns with cyclone risks, both operators and passengers should remain aware of potential weather disruptions and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.

The authority also calls on the public to aid in maintaining maritime safety by reporting any unsafe practices they may observe. “While we all anticipate a joyful holiday season, responsible maritime activities are essential for the safety of our families and communities,” Commander Cawaki cautioned.

In summary, MSAF is ramping up safety measures to ensure a secure festive season on Fiji’s waterways. By working together, authorities and the public can contribute to a safe and enjoyable holiday experience for everyone. This proactive approach not only promotes safety but also fosters a sense of community responsibility as Fijians prepare to celebrate the holidays.

This initiative reflects a commitment to safety and vigilance, encouraging a collective approach to ensure that the festive season is both joyful and secure for all.
