The Maritime Authority of Fiji (MSAF) is set to enhance its surveillance and inspection efforts at major ports and jetties throughout the festive season. This initiative will involve collaboration with various agencies to conduct routine safety checks, ensuring that vessel operators adhere to essential safety regulations.
These regulations focus on several key areas, including the certification of boat captains, the condition of vessels, and the maximum number of passengers allowed onboard. According to Joweli Cawaki, the CEO of MSAF, any instances of non-compliance or unsafe operations will be dealt with promptly.
Cawaki emphasized the authority’s commitment to preserving the safety of Fiji’s maritime environment, particularly during this busy time of year, which can pose risks for travelers. “Through enhanced monitoring and cooperation with our partners, we aim to ensure that everyone enjoys a safe and happy holiday season,” he stated.
In light of the holiday festivities coinciding with the cyclone season, MSAF is urging boat operators, passengers, and the public to prioritize safety and comply with maritime regulations when planning trips to the outer islands. Cawaki noted the importance of being cautious during this time, as potential weather disruptions could affect travel plans.
“While we hope for good weather, it’s crucial that all maritime travel is planned with safety in mind. Always check the weather forecast and be prepared to adjust your plans if conditions worsen,” he advised.
With Christmas and New Year approaching, MSAF is stressing the importance of meticulous trip planning. Travelers are urged to remain vigilant and responsible while navigating Fiji’s waterways. Moreover, MSAF encourages the public to report any observations or concerns related to vessel safety, reinforcing the need for collective responsibility in maintaining a safe maritime environment.
The proactive measures being implemented by the MSAF reflect a strong commitment to safety and community well-being. By prioritizing safety during the festive period, both officials and the public can work together to ensure that everyone enjoys a joyful and secure holiday season.
As we embrace the holiday spirit, let’s remember that our vigilance and cooperation can significantly enhance the safety of our maritime journeys.
