The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) has acknowledged an incident involving the Lomaiviti Princess II, which was partially capsized at Suva Harbour. Although details are still being discussed, MSAF refrained from providing immediate comments, indicating that further information would come after consultations with the line minister.
This incident follows recent concerns regarding the safety of Goundar Shipping vessels. Notably, the Lomaiviti Princess II was previously involved in another incident where it ran aground while on its usual route from Natovi Jetty to Levuka, carrying over 40 passengers and multiple vehicles. In that scenario, fortunately, no injuries were reported, and the vessel received assistance from another ship, the Saint Mary, which helped transport the passengers to safety.
Public frustration has been on the rise regarding Goundar Shipping’s safety record, prompting calls for thorough investigations and enhanced safety audits. The proactive response from maritime authorities not only addresses immediate safety concerns but also paves the way for improving operational protocols to protect passengers and crew in the future.
There is hope that these investigations will lead to strengthened safety measures in inter-island transport, ensuring a more reliable and secure experience for travelers in Fiji.
