The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change in Fiji, led by Permanent Secretary Dr. Sivendra Michael, has reaffirmed its strong support for the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) amid recent criticisms from Goundar Shipping Services. Dr. Michael emphasized the importance of safety and environmental protection, stating unequivocally that no individual or company is above the law.
The ministry’s response comes after Goundar Shipping threatened to withdraw its services and cast doubts on MSAF’s regulatory oversight. Dr. Michael highlighted that the socio-economic significance of inter-island shipping must not come at the expense of marine ecosystems or legal adherence. He noted, “Safety, environmental protection, and regulatory compliance are not optional – they are legal and moral obligations.”
In line with the Environment Management Act of 2005, Dr. Michael pointed out the necessity for a comprehensive Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) conducted by a registered consultant before giving any clearance for operations. MSAF’s commitment to uphold stringent safety measures echoes previous announcements concerning the industry’s regulatory reforms, underlining a focus on both public safety and environmental integrity.
This proactive stance allows for potential enhancements to the maritime industry by addressing environmental risks such as disruption of marine pathways and reef degradation caused by high-speed vessels. Such measures not only ensure regulatory compliance but also promote the protection of Fiji’s delicate marine environment for future generations.
The overarching message from both the Ministry and MSAF showcases a significant commitment to maintaining high standards of maritime safety and environmental conservation, paving a hopeful path forward for Fiji’s inter-island shipping industry. With ongoing efforts to reform legislation and improve operational compliance, there is optimism for a safer and more sustainable maritime transport framework in the region.
