The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) is taking significant measures to ensure that all shipping vessels operate with qualified crew members aboard. CEO Joeli Cawaki highlighted the importance of this initiative, especially in light of recent maritime incidents that have raised safety concerns.

Cawaki stated that MSAF is actively investigating various maritime incidents, including two recent ship groundings that occurred between Natovi and Ovalau, as well as one off Moala. Preliminary findings from these investigations suggest that human error plays a critical role in such incidents, emphasizing the need for qualified personnel on ships.

MSAF intends to wait for the completion of the investigation reports before making any determinations on potential penalties for those responsible. Cawaki reassured that once the reports are available, the authority will implement corrective measures in accordance with their licensing regulations, ensuring accountability and adherence to safety standards.

This initiative is a positive step towards enhancing maritime safety in Fiji. By prioritizing crew qualifications and understanding the factors leading to accidents, MSAF aims to foster a safer maritime environment for all. The ongoing investigations and subsequent actions signal a commitment to preventing future incidents and protecting both maritime workers and the surrounding environment.

In summary, MSAF’s focus on implementing qualified crews aboard shipping vessels represents a proactive approach to maritime safety, aiming to reduce human error and improve overall operational standards within Fiji’s waters.
