The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) is taking steps to guarantee that all vessels operating in its waters are staffed with qualified crew members. Chief Executive Officer Joeli Cawaki emphasized the importance of crew qualifications amid an investigation into recent maritime incidents, including two ship groundings off Natovi and Ovalau, and one near Moala.
Cawaki expressed MSAF’s concern regarding these groundings, noting that human error appears to be a contributing factor. He stated, “We need to see that they are qualified,” highlighting the necessity for proper training and qualifications of crew members.
The ongoing investigations will guide MSAF in determining appropriate actions, including potential penalties for those responsible, which will align with the licensing requirements set by MSAF.
As the investigation progresses, MSAF remains committed to adhering to regulatory standards and ensuring maritime safety in Fiji’s waters. This proactive approach demonstrates MSAF’s dedication to enhancing safety protocols, ultimately leading to a safer maritime environment.
This concerted effort to improve crew qualifications and investigate incidents reflects a promising commitment to maritime safety, ensuring the protection of both lives and resources. By addressing these issues, Fiji can pave the way for more reliable and safer maritime operations in the future.
