Fiji’s Maritime Overhaul: What Changes Are on the Horizon?

The Fijian Cabinet has given the green light for a comprehensive review of critical maritime legislation, aiming to bolster the operational capabilities of the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF). This legislative revision will focus on three main acts: the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji Act 2009, the Maritime Transport Act 2013 along with its subsidiary legislation, and the Ships Registration Act 2013 and its respective subsidiary legislation.

Originally established by the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji Act 2009, MSAF is tasked with upholding the provisions outlined in the Maritime Transport Act 2013 and the Ships Registration Act 2013. The upcoming review is crucial for enhancing MSAF’s ability to effectively oversee maritime safety, transport, and vessel registration in Fiji.

This legislative overhaul is not happening in isolation. Recently, Minister for Public Works, Transport and Meteorological Services, Ro Filipe Tuisawau, has been vocal about the necessity for improvement in the vessel procurement processes, following incidents where vessels entered the Fijian waters without proper assessments by MSAF.
