Fiji’s Maritime Mystery: Passenger Vessel Grounds in Maloi Passage

The Maritime Authority of Fiji (MSAF) is conducting an investigation into the grounding of the passenger vessel Lomaiviti Princess II in the Maloi Passage on the west coast of Ovalau. The incident occurred while the vessel, which was carrying over 40 passengers, crew members, and five vehicles, was en route from Natovi Jetty to Levuka.

MSAF’s chief executive officer, Joweli Cawaki, reported that he became aware of the situation soon after the vessel ran aground around 9:20 AM. He noted the fortunate presence of another vessel, Saint Mary, which assisted in towing and transporting the passengers to Levuka.

Captain Aca James Small, manager of Goundar Shipping Service, explained that the Lomaiviti Princess II was following its established route when it struck a reef. He indicated that the investigation would focus on potential crew negligence, as the route is one they typically navigate without incident. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported among the passengers.

Captain Small also mentioned that the vessel would require high tide to facilitate salvage operations. As a precaution, Goundar Shipping Limited has suspended all scheduled travel to Levuka until further notice.
