Goundar Shipping Limited celebrated a significant milestone with the official launch of two new vessels, the M.V Lady Daya and the Motor Tanker Captain Lai. The event also marked the introduction of the company’s new fast ferry service, Goundar Fast Ferry PTE Ltd.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, the chief guest at the event, stated that these developments are crucial not only for Goundar Shipping but also for Fiji, as they enhance maritime capabilities and strengthen connections between the islands, thereby fostering economic growth. He described the M.V Lady Daya and Tanker Captain Lai vessels as a tribute to the Goundar family’s parents and a testament to Goundar Shipping’s commitment to the Fijian people.
The Prime Minister highlighted the Goundar family’s long-standing contribution to the maritime industry, linking the islands and supporting local communities. He acknowledged the legacy of Narayan Sami Goundar and Captain Ilaitia Goundar, known as Captain Lai, emphasizing their vision which has paved the way for the current advancements.
Goundar Shipping Limited now serves about 90 percent of Fiji’s population, possessing the country’s largest fleet and crew. The M.V Lady Daya is expected to enhance transportation efficiency between the islands and bolster economic activity by facilitating better movement of goods and services. The Captain Lai vessel, recognized as Fiji’s first locally owned and registered tanker, will target fuel oil and hazardous cargo transportation, presenting new opportunities for local seafarers and enhancing their career prospects both locally and internationally.
Prime Minister Rabuka praised George Goundar and his family for continuing the legacy of Narayan Sami Goundar with dedication and passion. He also commended their efforts in training the next generation of seafarers, including women, and emphasized the importance of gender equality and inclusivity in all industries.
The Prime Minister reiterated the Government’s commitment to supporting the maritime industry to ensure smooth movement of people and goods across the islands. He assured continued collaboration with stakeholders like Goundar Shipping to maintain strong, safe, and sustainable maritime infrastructure for future generations.
Since its registration in 2010, Goundar Shipping Limited has significantly expanded its fleet, adding vessels such as the Lomaiviti Princess II in 2012, the MV Lomaiviti Princess III in 2015, and several others in subsequent years from Japan and South Korea, culminating in the introduction of the MV Joseph P. Lomaiviti Princess XI and XII in 2021.
